How to see a stereogram

The relaxed-eye method, the reflection trick and a practice picture. Most people get it within a few tries.

Practice picture

Practice stereogram: a golden sphere

Hidden here: a ball floating in the middle. Look for it with the steps below.

Method 1: nose to screen

  1. Bring your face close to the screen so the picture is blurry.
  2. Look through the screen, as if at something far behind it. Don't try to focus.
  3. Move back slowly, keeping that relaxed, far-away gaze. The two dots at the top become three: hold it there.
  4. Wait a few seconds. The hidden shape slowly appears in depth.

Method 2: the reflection trick

On a glossy screen or printed photo, look at the reflection of something behind you (a lamp, your own face). Keep your eyes focused on that reflection; the hidden picture appears in the pattern.

Method 3: the two dots

Look at the two dots at the top and let your eyes relax until you see four. Gently adjust until the middle two merge into one, so you see three dots. Without moving your eyes, look down into the picture.

Questions

Should I cross my eyes?

No. Our stereograms are made for "wall-eyed" (parallel) viewing: you look past the picture, not in front of it. Crossing your eyes shows the shape sunk in instead of raised.

How long does it take?

The first time can take a minute or two. Once you have seen one, it usually takes a few seconds.

Is it bad for your eyes?

No. It is the same relaxed focus you use when looking into the distance. Stop if your eyes feel tired and try again later.

Why does the shape look sunken?

You are crossing your eyes (focusing in front of the picture). Relax and look further away instead.
